Where did Fitz get his bad temper from?

In Stellarlune, Rayni said that Alvar used to tell stories about Fitz’s temper. I know a lot of you probably assume that Fitz’s temper comes from Alvar’s betrayal, but Alvar might’ve talked about Fitz’s temper before he betrayed Sophie and her friends.

Let me know what you think!

PS: I always knew that Alvar wasn’t the angel he pretended to be. (He’s a horrible actor)

Honestly, I think Fitz has the right to let it all out. He's always had to be perfect, the star of his family that looks perfect. We already know that they're far from perfect, and a lot of that responsibility goes to Fitz. I highly doubt his dad would take him to a therapist or anything, and that's just because they're Vackers, and can't.

From Sophie’s little antics I guess? Though in some instances it was lack of communication

It’s not exactly a temper. It’s just his way of processing and understanding emotional situations. Lots of people do it. I hate that it’s seen as a bad thing when I know there are so many kind people who can relate to Fitz’s reactions.

Alvar lies about so much, what he told her isn't necessarily true

everyone has a right to their feelings, including fitz

Lots of people tempers, he's learning to control his

I seriously doubt elves even have therapy

can I just mention Fitz has been like very severely mad only about three memorable times in this series and I would be a whole lot more angry if all that stuff happened to him

at some point his dad was practically freaking dead and the only person with him was his friend is that not one of the stages of grief please and then his ex who he still liked got with his best friend? that's a lot emotionally

tempers are normal things lots of people have. not everyone who gets angry easily had anger issues! this stuff just happens.

I'm guessing Alvar was talking about that time Alden went mad? Alvar hasn't been around Fitz a lot. Fitz says that he only saw Alvar once a year, twice if he was "lucky". And if the only times of the year Fitz shows to have a "bad temper" is when Alvar is around, then Alvar may consider being the problem.

Well yeah, siblings will be like: ohhh he got SooOOOooOOo mad when I took his stuffed animal, isn't that stupid? Hehehe such a baby. So I would say that's an explanation as someone who has both told people crap about my siblings and had crap said about me by them. It comes with the territory.

But also his temper seems pretty normal to me, it's not like Fitz is walking around giving off Grinch vibes for the entire series. I haven't re-read the books in awhile but I don't remember him having huge reactions unless something kind of serious was going down.

Edit: (Wait sorry this is actually Anna's Fantasy but my account switched halfway through because I forgot to refresh the page. My bad).

Anyway,

I'm not sure about this (just kind of making it up), but here are my ideas:

  1. Since he has to appear perfect to the public, he has to keep his emotions he experiences outside of home hidden. When he's out of public view and around people he knows well/is more comfortable around, any little thing could make him lash out at a loved one, which is his way of unleashing those bottled up emotions. This has definitely happened to me before, and it's kind of weird, but I'm definitely more "comfortable" (though that's not really the right word) with lashing out/ranting/going everywhere verbally when I'm around my family than at school.

  2. When he encounters problems and struggles, he needs to find one specific root cause of them even if there were multiple factors. He pinpoints the cause, which is almost always a person, and (whether intentionally or not) directs his emotions (which usually turn into anger) to them, resulting in him lashing out at usually just one person. In Exile, he knows deep down that what happened to Alden was a mistake and it may even be more Alden's or the Council's fault for making the decision to go into Exile in the first place, he can't really get mad at either of them. However, he knows that Sophie was there involved, so he pinpoints her as the single cause of all of the problems happening at that moment even though there were a lot of factors.

  3. He has really specific perceptions of people that he doesn't like to see altered, so when someone he knows ends up being different than he believed them to be, it's hard for him to process it in a rational way, like when Keefe joins the Neverseen.

  4. Another interesting thing is that he usually puts people in two groups when this happens - his and the other person he's mad at. In Exile, he makes Biana on his side even though it's clear she's not as angry, just more hesitant. In Flashback, he sees that his parents are more lenient in Alvar and he automatically sees them as against him. He can't understand that there's a gray area in between.

Alvar's an example of all four of these things. Fitz was comfortable and probably willing to lash out at him because he's his sibling. Since they were (relatively) close, finding out that his brother was completely different for what he believed was super hard for him to process. So many problems were happening in Flashback - the Vackers had a bad reputation, he was losing family/friends, he's been attacked by the Neverseen, and has to deal with a ton of other struggles in his school and social life. Alvar is involved in some of these changes, and so Fitz puts all the blame on him. When his friends are trying to stop him from killing Alvar, he feels like they're all on Alvar's side and therefore against Fitz, which causes even more feelings of betrayal and anger!

I do think that overall it's just the pent up emotions he needs to release and then just a temper anyway. I have a super short temper and I'm not sure why. It's definitely something that can and should be controlled if possible, but some people are surely more prone to it than others.

I agree with this. Bottling up your emotions can make them completely spill out. It's not really Fitz's fault.

What do you think?
