Whats your automotive timeline??

by marco_1978_spyder » Sun Nov 28, 2010 10:56 am

A response in the ever popular "Whats your age" thread got me thinking this would also be an interesting, mind jogging, thread.

I'll start, but wow, lets see if I can remember!!

Summer 1988 I begin learning how to drive in my parents gold 1980 sunbird hatchback 4cyl.
Spring 1989 Get my licence and claim the 1980 Sunbird as mine.
2. Drive Sunbird to highschool until I blow the motor up. Dismantled car.
3.Drive families (and assumed by me) 1984 Olds Omega thru 1990.
4.Accuire another 1980 Sunbird in 1990 swap in a v8 and drive as daily driver..
5.1991: Find First Monza. Licence and drive for 2 weeks until V6 blew up.
Swapped in V8 (307 chevy) from sunbird and dismantled sunbird.
6.early 1993 same Monza T-boned on passenger side (i slid on the ice) totaled.
7.1993 Bought 1978 monza with Mirage flares. Dubbed the mad max monza.
swapped in 307. Drove like a mad man. Eventually Sold. Also drove a 1984 Aries K wagon company car during this time (and you thought an X-body was a heap!)
I also drove a blue 1975 Monza 2+2 262 car during this time. Rear lower control arm held up by bungie cords clipped to rear window trim.
8.1995 I found my Red Spyder.
9.1996 Found a Gold hatchback for $60 yep $60. Drove for a little while, lower control arm area's were going bad. Sold for $300.
Late 1996.. Financed a New Cavalier (why why why !!!) Sold off. broke even (phew)
1997 Found a deal on a Black Spyder body shell from Utah $150 + shipping.
Got it runnin' and drove it along with the Cavalier. Sold in 2004 The Official H-Body Internet Community • View topic (2)
1998 Bought a 1980 Formula Sunbird set up for drag racing. Raced it around my neighborhood a few times with just an open headered 305.
1999 Traded that car for a green 1976 Monza V8 in real nice shape. Eventually Sold The Official H-Body Internet Community • View topic (3)
2000 Grey 1980 Monza V6 for a winter car. Dismantled
2001 Blue 1980 sunbird notchback for a winter car..car was stolen.
2002 Silver 1980 Monza Spyder v6 from missouri in beautiful shape...'till I banged it up. Sold.
2003 Black 1980 Monza sport hatch V6 daily driver from Mass. Dismantled
2004 White Sunbird Formula from Syracuse. Still have it. Not licenced.
2005 Brown 1978 Sunbird Coupe. Hit a deer. Repaired car, still have it. No motor, unlicenced. Drove '79 Black Spyder for a while..
2006 Financed a Chevy Aveo..

No Doubt. lol. I think I ate up about an hour of my time typing all that out.

Was a good refresher. Probably too arduous a task for most. Considering the lenght of some timelines.

I agree with Doug. It would take me a week to type out all mine. I will sum it up with:
1 Been making money working on cars since I was 15.
2 Learned to drive in late 83.
3 First car was a 76 Mustang II.
4 Second thru 49 were Monzas (and clones)
5 Have had 49 Hbodies up until 1992 (only 3 left now)
6 Still kickin' it with the cars after 69 of them so far...

Woah dude! That has me beat by a mile. You must certainly hold the worlds record for most h bodies owned.

At 21 or 22 owned here, I'm still probably down the list a few notches compared to some collectors.

20 is probably about average for anyone who cought monza fever in the early 90's.

I think I read somewhere that someone has owned over 100 H-Bodies and I wish I could have kept quite a few of them. Living at home when I started aquiring them and ran out of room fast. Only one Vega out of all of them and she is still mine. I can thank my aunt for getting me into the Monzas. She had a yellow Spyder with the red graphics and I thought that car was awesome when I was just 9 years old. I told her that I will have one some day. I remember her saying something like "they probably won't be around anymore" when I get to drive. The Official H-Body Internet Community • View topic (30) I had an awesome 79 Firenza that I should have never sold, a 79 Spyder that needed/cried for a V8 that was mint other than the engine was blown.

Re: Whats your automotive timeline??

by spencerforhire » Sun Nov 28, 2010 9:24 pm

This took an hour to compose "offline"; I reserve the right to edit as my brain keeps going "Oh! Oh! I just remembered ANOTHER one!"

Wow, this is going to be tough; in fact I might have to leave out some of the more boring examples of “daily driver”, plus I know I can’t account for the multitude of “parts cars” that I dismantled over the years. I've also left out a bunch that were re-sold before I could form any attachment to them.
This timeline starts in 1973- the year I turned 16

1968 Biscayne 250 ’glide(hand-me-down from my father)
1967 Camaro 250 3-speed stick
1967 Camaro 327 4-speed(SS “clone”)
1967 Camaro 327 3-speed(parts car)
1974 GTO 350 4-speed X-body(Nova platform)
1974 Nova 2-door 250 TH350(daily driver)
1978 Camaro 350 4-speed
1974 Vega 4-speed- bought so girlfriend(now wife)could learn to drive stick in 1981
1976 Vega GT auto- my first V8 swap (installed 262 4-speed from 1975 Monza)
1977 Monza 262 TH350
1974 Vega Wagon auto(winter d.d)
1977 Vega GT 5-speed(installed 305 and 4-speed from 1979 Monza Spyder)
1977 Vega Wagon auto(winter d.d.)
1979 Monza 305 TH350
1980 Sunbird 3.8V6 TH350(wife’s d.d. for 4 years)
1982 S-10 2.8 V6 4-speed
1978 Sunbird Wagon 3.8 V6 5-speed(winter d.d.)
1977 Vega GT 5-speed (installed 400/4-speed/9”rear in 1987 or 1988(still in my yard)
1979 Malibu wagon 3.8 Chevy V6 auto (d.d.)
1986 S-10 ex-cab 2.8 5-speed(4”&6” drop)
1988 GMC Sierra ex.cab 305 7004R(3”&4” drop)
1977 Vega Wagon auto(current street car project)
1993 Suburban(current)
1972 Vega HB(drag car project)

I’ve left out all the Fireflys(Geo Metro in the US) as well as a string of GM A,B and J-body wagons that were primarily my wife’s d.d.’s over the years, as well as the current “fleet” of Saturns. From 1981-1990 I bought and sold or dismantled somewhere between 30 and 35 H-bodies of every possible type, including at least 10 V8 Monza’s(on top of the four I built for my own use, I supplied motor mounts, etc., for 6 other V8 swaps)

The "fleet"-
72 Vega HB Drag Car -383/'Glide/9"(9.35@146.19)(5.94@117.28 1/8th)
77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)
06 Silverado 2WD ex.cab daily
03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter
06 GMC Canyon Shop truck
07 Colorado project( 5.3 4L60e swap)
99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project
07 Saturn Ion Redline project
and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"
Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....
