Why I love granny squares

As a mother to a delightful 18-month-old, my crochet time is admittedly a bit limited. That’s why I’ve turned my focus to smaller, bite-sized projects like granny squares. They’re quick, easy to memorize, and fantastic for using up leftover yarn.

And while the chill of winter lingers outside, my mind wanders to the promise of spring. That’s what inspired me to share a floral granny square pattern with you all. Crocheting these squares is like a burst of sunshine, sure to warm your heart and bring a smile to your face.

What to Do With Granny Squares?

Granny squares are super versatile projects that can be used for so many projects. Because of their size they perfect as a portable projects to work on the go when you are at the park with the kids, waiting for appointment or want to crochet smaller projects as a break from bigger ones.

Their compact size makes them ideal for quick crafting sessions, and their simplicity allows for a relaxing crochet experience without the need for intense concentration.

Whether you’re looking to create a colorful blanket, a stylish bag, or even a cozy hat, granny squares can be combined in countless ways to achieve your desired result.

Is the flower granny square for beginners?

This square involves advanced techniques like working treble crochet stitch and working behind the flower’s petal. So this is not the perfect project for beginners.

Of course, you can switch the treble crochet stitch with double crochet to make it easier, but still, it is better to start with simpler squares like the classic granny square and the sunburst granny square.

No time to crochet now! Save it to your Pinterest board and crochet later.

Flower granny square step-by-step video tutorial

As this is not the perfect beginner granny square pattern I prepared a video tutorial to guide you through each step of the process, ensuring that you can follow along at your own pace.

The video tutorial will provide visual cues and in-depth explanations, making it easier to master the pattern and techniques required for this project.

TIP: After I finished joining my square for the Flower tote bag, I made a few changes, and that’s why there is a bit of a difference between the video tutorial and the written instructions. For the last round of single crochet, place 1 sc, ch2, 1sc for each corner, NOT 2sc, ch2, 2sc. This way, it will be easier for them to join later.

Overall notes

As I am turning the flower granny square into a tote bag, I chose to work with a 3.5 mm crochet hook and the Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn. You, however, are free to select any yarn from your collection that matches well with the corresponding hook size.

This granny square design is particularly well-suited for using up small yarn scraps. So, rummage through your yarn stash for those leftover strands and join me in crocheting some delightful squares.

After you finish round 3, the flower can look misshaped, but don’t worry in round 4 it will lay flat.

Do not try to start the square with a magic ring because it will be tight, and there will not be enough space for the stitches.
