The NCAA Tournament has returned.

The Super Regional Pairings are now set. Half of the regionals begin on June 10 with the other half beginning on June 11.

Monday’s Regional Analysis

• Every year, there is at least one team that breezes through regionals without any real drama, and no team breezed more over the weekend thanAuburn,which finished off UCLA by an 11-4 score Monday afternoon. The Tigers scored at least 11 runs in all three games and scored 51 total in wins over Southeastern Louisiana, Florida State and UCLA.
• After a 13-4 win overCoastal Carolina Monday afternoon, East Carolina has a massive opportunity in front of it this weekend. ECU has been in plenty of super regionals, but it has only ever hosted one once. It was in 2001 and wasn’t on campus because Clark-LeClair Stadium had not yet been built. It’s well documented that ECU is the best program to have never gone to Omaha, and part of that is because it has so often had to go on the road for supers. Texas isn’t an easy matchup this weekend, but the Pirates will undoubtedly take any matchup as long as it’s played at home.
• Monday regional games are all about what a team can find on the mound, because no college team is equipped to be fresh for a fourth different day of competition. A couple of teams that really found things on this Monday areNorth CarolinaandOregon State.The Tar Heels got 5.1 scoreless innings of relief from Gage Gillian and Davis Palermo in a 7-3 win overVirginia Commonwealth.Meanwhile, after taking a late lead againstVanderbilt,OSU turned to ace Cooper Hjerpe, who closed out a 7-6 win with two scoreless frames.

Sunday’s Regional Analysis

• Regional weekend has a way of taxing a pitching staff, especially when a team has to come through the loser’s bracket, and that has a way of creating unexpected heroes on the mound. One such hero was created in Gainesville inFloridalefthander Carsten Finnvold. He came on after starter Timmy Manning walked the first two batters he faced and proceeded to throw nine innings in a 7-2 win overOklahoma.Finnvold’s performance not only helped the Gators push the Sooners to a seventh game in the regional on Monday, but it should help reset the pitching staff a bit ahead of that game.
• With 1-2 showings, Georgia Southern and Miamiare the only hosts to not be taking part in regional finals. The Eagles lost a 3-1 game toTexas Tech, which would go on to lose to Notre Dameby a 2-1 score in the regional final, clinching a spot in a super regional for the Irish for a second straight year. The Hurricanes took two losses as the Coral Gables Regional played three games to get back on schedule. First, it dropped a 2-1 decision to Mississippi in a winner’s bracket game. Then, it lost a 4-3 game toArizona in which it stranded the tying run on third base.
• Oklahoma Statehad a wild day at the ballpark. It fell behindMissouri State12-0 after the third inning early in the day before rallying to win 29-15 in just over five hours. Then, it played a back-and-forth game withArkansaslate into the night. With the Cowboys leading 10-8 in the bottom of the ninth, the Razorbacks scored two runs to send the game to extra innings. In the 10th, OSU went up 14-10, and for good, with two runs on a two-run single for Aidan Meola and a two-run homer for Nolan McLean, who also pitched the last two innings of the game. The game seven in this regional Monday should be intense.
• With a 20-1 win over Michigan, Louisvillebecame the first team to push a regional to Monday, with the winner of the rematch between the Cardinals and Wolverines headed to super regionals. The Louisville offense got going early, as they chased Michigan starter Angelo Smith after just one-third of an inning and forced the Wolverines to use seven pitchers. Third baseman Ben Metzinger led the way by going 3-for-6 with two home runs and five RBIs. On the mound, Louisville lefthander Riley Phillips gave up two hits and one run in five innings and lefthander Evan Webster followed by giving up one hit in four scoreless innings.

Saturday’s Regional Analysis

• Texas Statebeat No. 2 national seedStanfordby a 5-2 score on the strength of an outstanding effort on the mound by righthander Levi Wells. He threw seven innings, giving up eight hits and two runs with one walk and six strikeouts. The Bobcats are in the driver’s seat, but Sunday doesn’t get any easier. They have leaned heavily on Zeke Wood and Wells in the rotation and now they’ve both pitched already. Whether it’s Stanford or UC Santa Barbara Sunday night, Texas State is going to face a good offense and the rest of its pitching staff will have to be up to the task.
• Arkansasmoved to one win away from a super regional with a somewhat strange 20-12 win overOklahoma State.The Cowboys led 10-5 after six innings and were in control, having worked over the Razorbacks’ pitching staff to that point, but Arkansas scored three in the seventh, eight in the eighth and four in the ninth to run away with a win. The Razorbacks hit seven home runs, including two from second baseman Robert Moore. On the mound, they used seven pitchers and will still likely have to piece it together on Sunday, but they’re no stranger to winning that way.
• Auburnreally impressed in a 21-7 win overFlorida Stateto advance to the final of its home regional. The Tigers had 19 hits and drew 16 walks from FSU pitchers. Shortstop Brody Moore led the way by going 5-for-5 with a double, triple, two walks and five RBIs.
• LSUhas pulled a rabbit out of its hat twice already this weekend. After coming back from 11-4 down in the eighth to beat Kennesaw State 14-11 on Friday, the Tigers came back from 6-2 down in the bottom of the ninth against Southern Miss to win in walk-off fashion 7-6 in 10 innings on a Josh Pearson chopper up the middle that scored Josh Stevenson from third.
• Michiganbecame the first team to advance to a regional final with a 7-3 win overLouisville.The Wolverines did it by getting to Cardinals ace Jared Poland. They got him for seven runs (six earned) on nine hits in his 4.2 innings. Center fielder Joe Stewart had three hits, including a home run, which came on the back end of back-to-back homers with right fielder Clark Elliott. On the mound, Michigan cobbled it together with five different pitchers taking the mound. They held the Cardinals to three runs and never let them put up a cooked number.
• Air Forcewon its first NCAA Tournament game since 1967 with a 5-1 victory overDallas Baptist.If the Falcons were going to get a standout pitching performance this weekend, it seemed safe to assume it would come from righthander Paul Skenes, but instead it was righthander Doyle Gehring. He held the Patriots to one run on three hits in seven innings to keep his team playing on to Sunday. That game also brings an end to a strange season for DBU. During non-conference play, it swept Southern Miss, won a series against Maryland looked like a possible Omaha team. In MVC play, though, the Patriots stumbled and just barely finished above .500. They also tend to play well in regional, as they’ve won at least two games in regionals eight out of 10 times in program history, but that wasn’t the case this time around.
• For the second day in a row, a highly-toutedGonzagapitcher got hit hard, as righthander William Kempner surrendered nine runs in 2.2 innings againstWright Statein an elimination game, but the Bulldogs survived by winning it 11-9. Gonzaga got great relief work from righthander Owen Wild (6.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R) and the offense made up ground after it trailed 9-4 at one point early in the game. By using Wild, Gonzaga burned a pitcher it would have ideally wanted to start this weekend, and yet, it still has to feel pretty good about its pitching situation, all things considered. Righthander Trystan Vrieling is ready to go in game 3, and the Zags, depite allowing 17 runs in two games, having actually taxed the bullpen much outside of Wild.

Friday’s Regional Analysis

• Southern Mississippi righthander Tanner Hall set a really high bar for pitching performances for the weekend with his effort against Army. He threw eight shutout innings, giving up four hits and one walk with nine strikeouts in a 2-0 Golden Eagles win. For a pitching-centric team like USM, that’s a perfect way for the opener to have gone.

• In the marquee matchup of the early window of Friday games, Florida State outlasted UCLA by a 5-3 score. Neither ace, FSU’s Parker Messick (5 IP, 4 H, 2 R) or UCLA’s Max Rajcic (6 IP, 5 H, 4 R), turned in his best start, which took the air out of the much-anticipated matchup on the mound, but it was a tight game that lived up to expectations in that regard. FSU grabbed a 3-0 lead after the top of the fifth and held on the rest of the way with help from the bullpen trio of Wyatt Crowell, Jonah Scolaro and Davis Hare.

• The early window of games Friday featured several top seeds getting pushed early in games, only to come back and win them comfortably in the end.Oral Robertstook a 1-0 lead onTexas A&Mbefore the Aggies went on to prevail 8-2.Air Forcetied Texas2-2 before the Longhorns took control and won 11-3.Southeast Missouri StateledLouisville2-0 before falling 7-2.HofstraledNorth Carolina1-0 and 2-1 before losing by a 15-4 score.

• It’s been hard to fight the feeling all season thatVanderbiltwas going to eventually put it all together and go on a run, but after losing 3-2 toSan Diego,time is officially out for that run to come. San Diego ace Brycen Mautz was excellent in giving up four hits and one run in seven innings, backing up what he’s done all season, but inconsistent offensive performance has also been a bugaboo for the Commodores all season and it just may be the case that it’s an issue they can’t overcome.

• When it was reported that Tennesseecatcher Evan Russell wasn’t going to be available for Friday’s opener against Alabama State, there was less worry about how it would impact the Volunteers’ chances against the Hornets and more concern about Russell’s availability moving forward. But after the Vols’ 10-0 win, the news about Russell seemed fairly positive. Coach Tony Vitello said Russell is under the weather, and while there is no guarantee about when he’ll be back on the field, that beats some of the more dire prognoses. This will be a story to monitor as the weekend goes on.

• In an interesting statistical tidbit, two different players hit home runs from both sides of the plate in one inning. East Carolinacenter fielder Bryson Worrell did it in a 17-1 win overCoppin State.Later,Auburnsecond baseman Cole Foster did it in a 19-7 win againstSoutheastern Louisiana, and Foster would go on to add a cherry on top with a third homer.

• Notre DameandTexas Techdidn’t even get a full inning played in its game to begin the Statesboro Regional before a lengthy weather delay, which makes it all the more impressive that the teams were able to play such a clean game, which ended in a 3-2 win for the Fighting Irish. The Irish scored two runs in the first on a two-run double for catcher David LaManna just before the delay began. After the delay, the bullpens held things scoreless until the eighth, when Texas Tech tied it on a two-run single for left fielder Easton Murrell. The Irish landed the final blow, however, as it pushed across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch. It was a long day at the park for both teams, but both are at a bit of an advantage when you consider that host Georgia Southern and four seed UNC-Greensboro didn’t get to play at all and will have to play two games each tomorrow to get the regional back on schedule.
